Charles Davis -- "Blue Gardenia"

Tenor sax man Davis plays with the lilting melodicism of Dexter Gordon with a hard-bop edge. Peter Washington establishes himself once again as a leading exponent of the straightahead schools of Paul Chambers and Ray Brown: solid time, natural tone, melodic solos, and unfailing support. And with Cedar Walton on piano and Joe Farnsworth on drums, you have a top-notch quartet, not a group of young pretenders.
This is a great collection of swinging jazz in the classic mold.
